One of the longstanding themes of Australian politics is the idea of northern development. This usually takes the form of the argument for vast taxpayer subsidized irrigation works to enable vastly expanded agricultural production. Writing lecture on nationalism for Modern Political Ideologies I was considering the relation between social democratic parties and the project of liberal nationalism. It is arguable that confronting a perceived Islamic fundamentalist challenge to liberal norms social democrats have moved towards a more unitary concept of national identity. Howard won the Liberal leadership in 1985 due to missteps by Andrew Peacock rather than any strong base of support.
